ACA Annual Conference 2015: Internationalisation: from strategy to implementation

One of the hallmarks of ACA Annual Conferences is the careful selection of expert speakers. One of this year's luminaries is Hans de Wit, the newly appointed Director of Boston College's Center for International Higher Education and successor of the legendary Philipp Altbach. Hans is one of the most prolific authors on international higher education. Having led the international operations of three Dutch universities, he later became the founding Director of a programme and research centre at the Catholic University of Milan. Altbach described him as "an influential spokesperson for what I might call 'thoughtful internationalization."
This year's ACA Annual Conference is dealing with institutional internationalisation strategies and will take place in Brussels, the capital of Europe. The event is expected to draw an audience of some 300 central actors and decision-makers in universities and colleges, such as rectors, vice-rectors, or international relations staff, and policy-makers and practitioners from government departments, international institutions, non-governmental organisations and think tanks. As always, ACA is striving to offer high-quality information, analysis and discussion.
The conference will take a double perspective on its theme, internationalisation strategies for higher education institutions. First, it will look at different concepts and approaches to internationalisation strategies and at ways to design them. Second, it will address issues around the implementation of such strategies.
The conference will address its theme from both a global and a European perspective.
Sub-themes of the conference include mainstreaming of internationalisation as a strategic approach, branding a higher education institution, funding internationalisation strategies, and generating internal 'buy in' for them. Likewise, we will look at particular challenges, and how to overcome them, such as integrating foreign students, teaching in English, incentivising short-term mobility of students and staff, and international marketing and student recruitment.
The ACA Annual Conference 2015 is a two-day event, preceded by a social programme on the preceding day. It is made up of a mix of plenaries and parallel workshops.
Plenary contributions include 'classical' presentations, but also panel discussions and 'debates'. The programme also includes the by now legendary conference dinner.
Overall, we aim at an event that not only provides useful information, reflection and analysis, but also ample opportunities for discussion, peer learning, and networking.
The conference language is English.
ACA is very proud to partner over this event with its member organisations Wallonia Brussels Campus and Flanders Knowledge Area, as well as the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training.
In our choice of speakers we remain very 'conservative'. We invite only speakers who have something to say and who are able to say this well.

Annual Conferences are chosen exclusively from a small group of internationally reputed experts in higher education research, policy and practice. In the coming weeks, we will present some of these outstanding personalities to you.
Does Brussels need an introduction? The 'capital of Europe' and, of course, Belgium is a charming metropolis of human size. It hosts most EU institutions, and thus always offers the extra benefit of a rendezvous with your counterparts in the European Commission. Brussels is one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, with a population composed of dozens of nationalities and speaking even more languages.
It is also a city of culinary delights where, as the legendary chef Jean-Pierre Choucroute once famously put it, it is near impossible to be served a bad meal.
The city of Brussels is famous for its fries, mussels, fine chocolates and a delightful diversity of beers. It is the city of legends like the singer Jacques Brel, the painter René Margritte and the cartoonist Hergé. Brussels is the place of celebrated architects, such as Victor Horta and Henry van de Velde, and it is the seat of the ACA team, inclusive of the famous hippopotamus.
