Making an audience of as many non-specialists from different backgrounds as possible understand years of research in just three minutes is the challenge set by the CNRS and the Conférence des Présidents d’Université (University Presidents Conference) for PhD students. For “Ma these en 180 secondes”, every French university research consortium has answered the call for volunteers and their best candidates will come together on the 3rd June 2015 for the national finals in Nancy.
“Ma thèse en 180 secondes” is based on the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, developed at the University of Queensland, and taken up in 2012 in Quebec by the Association Francophone pour le Savoir (ACFAS) who wished to extend the project to all French-speaking countries. In 2014, the CPU and the CNRS decided to jointly invite all French PhD students to take part in the competition. That same year, France won the international finals of the competition in Quebec.
A spotlight on French research, this competition is also a unique chance for PhD students to popularise the contents and the issues of their research for the general public, and to acquire communication competences – far more than just an exercise in style.
This year, exceptionally, Science & You will be hosting the national finals of the competition on the 3rd June 2015 which will select the three winners to go on to represent France at the international finals which will take place at the Sorbonne in Paris on the 1st October.

Faire comprendre à un auditoire profane et diversifié des années de recherche en trois minutes et au plus grand nombre, tel est le défi lancé par le CNRS et la Conférence des présidents d’université (CPU) aux doctorants. Pour la deuxième édition du concours « Ma thèse en 180 secondes », l’ensemble des regroupements universitaires français se sont portés volontaires et feront se rencontrer leur meilleur candidat le 3 juin 2015 à Nancy au cours de la finale nationale.
« Ma thèse en 180 secondes » est inspiré du concours Three minute thesis (3MT®), conçu à l’Université du Queensland et repris en 2012 au Québec, par l’Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS) qui a souhaité étendre le projet à l’ensemble des pays francophones. En 2014, la CPU et le CNRS décident de s’associer pour proposer à l’ensemble des doctorants français de participer au concours. Cette même année, la France remporte la finale internationale du concours au Québec.
Coup de projecteur sur la recherche française, ce concours est aussi une occasion unique pour les doctorants de vulgariser le contenu et les enjeux de leurs travaux auprès du grand public et d’acquérir des compétences en communication, bien au-delà du simple exercice de style.
Cette année, Science & You accueille de manière exceptionnelle la finale nationale du concours le 3 juin 2015 qui déterminera les trois lauréats qui défendront la France lors de la finale internationale qui se déroulera le 1er octobre prochain à la Sorbonne à Paris.
