Can engineering solutions mitigate the climate change before we need to adapt? How can we build low carbon energy systems? How can we integrate water, energy, transport, waste and food systems so that we decouple development from growing use of resources? What are the societal and economic challenges before implementing clearly beneficial engineering solutions? What is the role of sustainable cities and regions?

These and many other questions are being asked and answered by researchers participating in the Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES Conference),

"If there are to be problems, may they come during my life-time so that I can resolve them and give my children the chance of a good life."
Kenyan proverb

also known as Dubrovnik Conference, an event devoted to scientists, engineers, policy makers, students and other interested parties in the field of sustainable development. The first six SDEWES Conferences were held in Dubrovnik. Following the great success of the 10th SDEWES Conference in Dubrovnik with over 1200 abstracts submitted and more than 500 participants from 65 countries, the next one, the 11th, took place in Lisbon, Portugal, with 694 abstracts and 304 participans from 51 countries. The 12th SDEWES Conference in Dubrovnik aims to live up to the success in previous years.
